Bring Back the Drama
For a while, fashion seemed determined to want us to dress and look more “demure.” Our closets became a study in restraint: quiet luxury, neutral palettes, clean tailoring, barely there logos, and the perfectly “simple outfit” that looked effortless but probably took 45 minutes to put together. Beige became a personality. Minimalism was literally everywhere.
But something has shifted.
The fashion pendulum is swinging back toward the fun stuff (THANK GOD) and our closets are getting a little louder. Feathers are dancing back onto hemlines, sleeves, bags, and shoes, while patterns are splattering bright pink skirts and teal blouses! Suddenly, dressing up feels exciting again. Goodbye, minimalism. Hello, eccentric fashion. Don’t get me wrong, I love my cashmere Brunello Cucinelli sweaters and the love of the perfect white tee will never die in my heart…
But aren’t we all feeling a little bored lately? We all need a little “whimsy” in our lives again!
Feathers might be the clearest sign of the shift. (am I slightly biased because I love feathers as an accent on pieces? yes) But anyways,,, once reserved for red carpets, old Hollywood glamour, and/or a scene from Mama Mia, feathers are making their way into everyday wardrobes. A feather-trimmed skirt paired with a simple knit suddenly feels perfectly wearable. A feathered sleeve can turn an otherwise basic blouse into a statement. Even a little feather detail on a shoe or handbag can make an outfit feel instantly more playful and whimsical!
And then there are the patterns.
For years, the safest fashion advice seemed to be: pick one statement piece and keep everything else quiet. Now? We are starting to wonder why we ever had to choose.
Stripes are getting bigger. Florals are becoming bolder. Polka dots have taken over garments like stylish chicken pox. Animal prints refuse to disappear. And also this has been accompanied by unexpected color combinations that are all fighting for a place in our closets!.
The best part is that eccentric fashion does not mean looking like you are wearing a costume. It is about letting your personality back into the outfit.
Last I checked, I don’t ever wanna be called BORING or SIMPLE!
Try pairing a printed skirt with a completely different print on top. Add a feathered jacket over jeans and a tank. Wear an embellished bag with your most boring black dress. Layer patterns that technically should not work together and see what happens. Fashion is much more interesting when there is a little tension. Also, this concept of styling seems daunting, but in reality it’s just all about experimenting and really letting your imagination dress you. It’s not meant to be something you magically throw on, and BOOM Vogue wants to capture you… These outfits actually take time, attention to detail, and work to create them. But this is what makes it fun, whimsical, and beautiful! The building process is how styling really becomes individualized and fun.
Maybe that is why this moment feels so refreshing. After years of capsule wardrobes and endless conversations about buying less and choosing “better”, fashion is reminding us that clothing can also just be fun.
Not every outfit needs to be timeless. Not every piece needs to work with everything in your closet. Some clothes are meant to make you smile when you see them hanging there.
So bring on the feathers. Bring on the prints. Wear the ridiculous hats. Buy the dress covered in purple sequins. Mix the stripes with the florals. Minimalism had its moment, but to be honest, I'm ready for a little more creativity. And honestly, our closets have never looked better for it.
