But Really, What are Those?

Shoes. I mean…what more need be said? They’re a must whether you love them or hate them. But for the fashion crowd, I’ve found that these outfit make-or-breaks have grown weirder in recent months.

I’m seeing a focus on freaky footwear. It started small but now it’s vocal and yelling. Orthopedic shoes, water shoes, boat shoes, specialized sport shoes, deconstructed shoes, melted shoes…the list goes on. We’re trending once again towards maximalism, at least on a footwear front. I love some of it, because of course, I too want to wear some nonsensical and impractical boot with my oversized shorts.

However, I worry about the wastefulness. How long do you really plan to wear those toe shoes? How long are we going to be rocking those new balance mules? Odd shoes are great, but they’re often difficult to wear all the time unless they become a staple.

People always want to be part of the trend, and this isn’t necessarily bad. Sometimes a trend comes along that focuses on pieces that can be adopted and worn in any closet. However, when the trend gets extended to only certain pieces, and the trend is maximizing, we run into issues.

Our sorority sister friend from the west village isn’t going to know how to wear those weird little flats she just bought. The crowd, unfortunately, is not nearly savvy or chic enough to rock and incorporate shoes like these full time.

Now I’m not going to be the trend police here, because frankly, I love a weird shoe and I know how to pick one I can own for a long time. All I’m asking is be careful! Know when it might be better to sit one out! Not every trend is going to be your trend.

Also…wait a month. Some new bullshit will come along that everyone “needs” to wear and you’ll be left moping around in your clown shoes.
