A Hairy Topic
I’ve been thinking a lot about hair as an extension of style. What does hair do for an outfit? How does it act as an accessory? I’m certainly someone who changes their hair quite a lot. I like to play around with things...have options. I find that whenever I do change my hair, I have access to new looks, style-wise. I also, of course, lose something perhaps. Maybe a suit now has to be worn differently with my mullet. Or my punky outfit looks a little odd with my well-kept and quaffed hair. I don’t see hair the same way I know some people do. For some, hair is an identity.
To change your hair would be to lose something or to signal a great shift. Think about it, Anna Wintour suddenly cut her bob: we’d all be afraid, right? But I see it more like sunglasses: just because I look good in a square frame...doesn’t mean I can’t wear an aviator. I think we often get overly concerned with having a “brand”. “Does this or that fit with my personal style?” While some need this strictness, I think it’s overly limiting. I can have a distinct personal style and a brand and still have room for fun. I think hair is a wonderful, impermanent way of testing the boundaries and possibilities of what your own unique way of looking might be. Much like an outfit or a stylistic choice, hair can be changed; it can be “taken off” if you don’t like it.
We all deserve more room for play in our lives. Play is what creates space for creative breakthroughs. Get a fun haircut, hell, get a bad haircut. Just promise to never bore yourself. When I start to feel bored, I know it’s time to try something new. Do yourself a favor and don’t invest in some ludicrous new trend, fuck up your hair instead!
