NYFW Fashion Editor Picks!
I want to open this with a brief note. I found NYFW this year to be, for the most part, duller than a box of gray crayons. Rachel Tashjian Wise wrote a wonderful article for The Washington Post about this that I encourage you all to read. However, for those who trudged through the “same as it ever was” sludge, you were rewarded with a few absolutely stunning collections.
Prabal Gurung
I mean…come on. You just want to sit and look. Clothes that excite you simply by looking at them through a picture don’t seem to be the norm anymore, but at Prabal Gurung, that's just the tip of the iceberg. Watching these clothes walk down the runway, I immediately wanted to know what they looked like in person. I wanted to feel them. The entire collection is characterized by this interplay between the lightness of the fabric and the weight of the color. How can a sheer blue dress pack such a punch, why does this flowy yellow top light me on fire? It’s powerful, from top to bottom. It’s clothing that insists on being worn.
Colleen Allen
Colleen Allen is the go-to designer for witches living between Brooklyn and LA. I’m just obsessed with her. It’s so out of time that it’s ahead of its time. It’s both wholly recognizable and completely implacable. I’m stuck asking myself if it’s for a Victorian boy or a Goop devotee, late for Pilates.
The clothing is challenging, it’s not trying to work with you. You either get it or you don’t. It’s beyond reproach by being radically honest. It’s weird…what about it? It’s a world I wish I lived in. Allen has created a world of soft light haunted by well-dressed ghosts.
Proenza Schouler
I think it feels very Dries. I’ve always loved the whole “just put it all on and run with it” approach to styling. I want to be friends with this girl: she’s chic, she knows art, she’s always in a rush to get somewhere, she’s her.
The collection is one playful surprise after another. It’s odd and professional in a fun way. It’s an exploration in texture, and I’m walking in tandem on every step of the journey.
