All black?
When I first moved to the city, I never understood the all black thing. I thought, “lazy, boring, too simple”. We live in a world of vibrant color and pattern; why would you choose the absence of it? Today? I see things differently. Perhaps it’s the less-than-sunny world outlook, short days, cold weather, but after years of living in the city, I’ve come to love all black. Monochromatic dressing is one thing, and a thing I feel I played out. Black on black is something else; it can be so freeing. Much like with my obsession with uniform, I have a bit of an obsession with all black. It creates rules; it gives you a structure to play with. When I decide I’m going for it I get to have more fun with hue, texture, and material.
I feel like I’m conveying a certain sense of “cool”. It’s not drab, it’s chic. It’s the chance to make separates sames. Tell me when someone walks into a room wearing all black, and I mean wearing it well, they don’t look like the best-dressed person there. It’s assertive, it demands to be looked at, but refuses to make eye contact. It’s paparazzi, it’s French, it’s Olsen. So, how are we making it work for you? How do you make the step into it? I think for starters, wear what you have. Don’t go buy a new wardrobe, ever.
My rule of thumb is to start with what you already wear. For me, I love sweaters, t-shirts, jeans, and overcoats. So, when it comes to buying an all black piece, I’m going to begin with my personal staples. By the way, all black jeans are a must. Everyone needs a great pair of black jeans. They are extremely versatile and can be worn up and down. If you don’t have a black sweater or t-shirt, don’t talk to me. Also, throw out the idea that black and navy don’t go, it's one of my favorite color combos. This is all to say that sometimes you can find abundance in lack. Wear some black.
