Sheer Genius
The long feud we’ve all battled with winter is finally over, and spring is upon us. With this transition from cold to warm comes longer days and new trends to match it. And our wardrobes aren’t just changing – they’re softening. So while you’re stowing your coats away and unearthing your shorts, let me give you some insight on what’s the scoop this spring.
The romantic aesthetic is accompanying the flowers this spring, and with it comes an array of styling techniques. The main trend to look out for? Lingerie. It’s cute, it’s feminine, it’s lacy, it’s sheer– it’s outerwear? Without being too risque to be outside the bedroom, lingerie-inspo is taking over, being implemented into tops, skirts, dresses, and pants. To help paint this lovely picture, let me give you some specific examples of those styling techniques I mentioned above.
An easy go-to within this trend would be a silk slip. These dresses can be mini to midi, with beautiful movement and lace or sheer detailing. Pair it with a heavy coat – a leather or denim jacket – and you’ve concocted the perfect balance of feminine and grunge. Another styling technique is to wear a lace bra underneath a basic camisole. Make sure the lace detailing can peek over the neckline of your tank to add a subtle “layer” and dimension to your outfit. If you’re feeling extra bold while getting ready for a night out, you can even layer a sheer blouse on top of that eye-catching bra to create a chic, sexy outfit.
Now, onto skirts. Skirts play into this trend through transparent textiles and, you guessed it, more lacy details. Asymmetry, ruffles, and pleats are also popular details to look out for when buying a skirt that still falls under the romantic vibe. An easy, transitional styling hack for a sheer skirt would be to layer it on top of a pair of denim pants. Another effortlessly edgy look to add to your wardrobe. Bloomers, on the other hand, were a popular short alternative last summer.
This year, the pants version has arrived. They’re billowy with a lacy hem (shocker) making them a perfect option for the warmer days ahead. And dare I say, the new linen pants of the summer?
Hopefully, lingerie as outerwear doesn’t seem as far-fetched of a concept now that I’ve taught you the basics when incorporating this trend into your looks. Layering and creating visual interest through adding different textures to outfits has been the star player in most trends these past few seasons. Lingerie with sheer pieces is just another layer to this major trend. So this spring, don’t be afraid to lean into softness and experiment with pieces that blur the line between intimate and everyday.
