Le Chêne Is Worth Every Dollar

Every once in a while, you leave a restaurant knowing you'll be thinking about it for weeks.

Not because the reservation was impossible to get or because the room was filled with people you recognized. It's because every detail, from the hospitality to the final sip of wine, felt intentional.

That was Le Chêne.

In a city where new openings are constantly competing for attention, it's rare for somewhere to feel instantly timeless. Le Chêne somehow manages to be refined without feeling intimidating, luxurious without ever becoming pretentious. The dining room is warm, intimate, and effortlessly elegant, the kind of place that invites you to linger over another course instead of checking the time.

Before we even get to the food, we have to talk about the wine.

Le Chêne has one of the most exciting wine programs I've experienced all year. The list is beautifully curated, whether you're searching for an iconic Margaux, a stunning White Burgundy, or hoping to discover a producer you've never encountered before. Every bottle feels thoughtfully selected, making it just as exciting for seasoned collectors as it is for someone looking to learn.

One of the evening's highlights came when we were poured a wine from the owner's own family estate. It was personal, generous, and quietly unforgettable, exactly the kind of hospitality you can't manufacture. It wasn't just another bottle on the list; it felt like being welcomed into someone's home.

Then came the dishes.

The Broiled West Coast Oyster arrives bathed in warm nduja butter, balanced with finger lime and a peach mignonette. Rich, smoky, spicy, bright, and delicately sweet all at once, it immediately sets the tone for the meal. Every element feels purposeful, with just enough acidity to keep you reaching for another bite.

The Red Crab Tartelette had this amazing sweet crab that is layered with lovage mayonnaise, juicy Sungold tomatoes, and fresh jalapeño, creating a bite that's vibrant, creamy, and full of late-summer energy. It's delicate without disappearing, and somehow tastes even brighter than it looks.

One of the biggest surprises of the night, however, was a dish centered around an ingredient that rarely gets the spotlight.

The Leeks Sauce Gribiche completely stole the show. I WOULD COME BACK JUST FOR THE LEEKS! Beautifully grilled leeks develop a deep smokiness that plays against a seaweed brown butter gribiche, finished with fresh dill. It's earthy, rich, herbaceous, and quietly complex. The seaweed adds an almost oceanic depth in the brown butter, bringing warmth and nuttiness, proving that vegetables can command the same attention as any luxury ingredient. It's the kind of dish that makes you rethink what simplicity can taste like when executed perfectly.

And then there was the main event.

The Pithiviers Terre & Mer is, without question, worth every dollar of its price tag.

Wrapped in impossibly flaky golden pastry, the filling combines savory pork farce with smoky eel, accompanied by silky potato gratin and a bright beetroot condiment that cuts through the richness beautifully. It's one of the most comforting, decadent dishes I've eaten this year, equal parts rustic and refined. Every bite feels indulgent without becoming heavy, showcasing technical precision while never losing its warmth.

If you're considering the splurge, here's my advice: don't stop at the entrée… Do the wine pairing.

It's one of the rare pairings where every pour genuinely transforms the dish in front of you. Each glass unlocks a new layer of flavor, making the entire meal feel like a conversation between the kitchen and the cellar. It's thoughtful, beautifully paced, and absolutely worth every dollar.

Le Chêne isn't simply another great new restaurant in New York. Exceptional hospitality, one of the city's most exciting wine lists, and a menu that balances precision with comfort make it a restaurant I'll return to again and again.
