The 5 AM Donut Run

There are some food spots you try once and think, okay, that was solid. And then there are the places that have you planning your next visit before you’ve even finished your last bite.

For me, that place is Village Donuts in New Jersey.

📍Village Donut Shop, Cassville Road, Jackson Township, NJ

We made the trip at 5 AM, because apparently I am now the kind of person who will wake up before the sun for a donut. And honestly? I would do it again.

The timing worked out perfectly because when we walked in, the owner was already hard at work making the donuts fresh for the day. There is something so satisfying about seeing a donut being made right in front of you, especially when you know it is going from fryer to glaze to your hands in basically real time.

And speaking of glaze, his is made in house, which you can taste. While we were there, he pulled a fresh glazed donut straight from the fryer, glazed it while we waited, and handed it over. Warm. Fresh. Perfectly glazed. It was one of those bites where nobody needs to say anything because everyone is silently processing how good it is.

Naturally, we ordered enough donuts to make this a proper research expedition.

Our lineup included the croissant glazed donut, which is essentially a bigger, lighter, flakier cousin of the traditional cronut. It has all those beautiful layers without feeling too heavy. We also got the cinnamon cake donut, a glazed cake donut, chocolate donut, black raspberry jelly donut, and, of course, a classic glazed.

And somehow, every single one was delicious.

My personal favorite was the cinnamon cake donut. I am a sucker for a good cake donut, and this one was perfection. Soft, cinnamon-y, and exactly the kind of donut you want with a cup of coffee. It had that nostalgic quality for me because when I was young and went to the beach I would always get a cake donut with my family. The other thing I really appreciated? None of the donuts were overly sweet.

This is a big deal for me. I love a donut, but I do not necessarily want to feel like I have just eaten an entire bag of sugar after two bites. Village Donuts gets the balance right. The flavors actually come through, the textures are spot on, and the sweetness complements the donut rather than completely taking it over.

But maybe my favorite part of the whole experience is that the owner is actually the one making it happen every day.

He runs the shop himself every day except Monday and Tuesday, and he is coming in at 5 AM to make the donuts fresh. There is something about that kind of hands-on, old-school dedication that makes a place taste even better. You can tell there is real pride behind what he is doing, and honestly, it makes the donuts feel personal.

So here is your Village Donuts pro tip: GO EARLY.

You do not necessarily have to come at 5 AM like we did, but do not assume you can casually stroll in later in the day and find the full selection waiting for you. These donuts sell out pretty early, and after trying them, I completely understand why.

If you find yourself in New Jersey with a donut craving, consider this your sign to set the alarm, grab a coffee, and make the trip.

5 AM? Worth it.

A cinnamon cake donut at sunrise? Absolutely worth it. And yes, I am already thinking about going back.
